The Filipino Legacy In Modern Video Games and Animation

EKR Accessories Blog - Buckle

Have you ever paused for a moment and thought about the famous Filipino celebrities that are well-known in the media because of their achievements in other countries?

Examples of these are the news articles of athletes, awardees, singers, or even actors that made a name for themselves online and in their respective industries. When it comes to “Pinoy Pride”, we find ourselves placing the spotlight on the trending news, or have a heavy focus on the achievements of our countrymen on the international scene.

While we often hear or see on the news that we are represented in the western media in one form or another, do we really know these notable people or characters that represented our country?

There are remarkable figures in famous video games and animated series that might be the voices of your favorite characters, or maybe some characters in popular video games and animated series are deeply inspired by our local culture.

Legazy® is here to give you a list of some of the people behind these amazing characters, and we’ll even add the characters that are directly inspired by Filipino culture.

  1. Dante Basco the voice of Prince Zuko and Jake Long

“I must capture the Avatar, and regain my honor.” if you’d grown up watching Prince Zuko on his journey in Avatar: The Last Airbender, in Nickelodeon, then, you’d most likely heard the voice of Dante Basco. He is the voice of our Fire Nation Prince and is a Filipino-American that made a name for himself in Hollywood.

You might even be surprised, but he is also the voice actor in Disney’s old animated series “American Dragon: Jake Long” and even lend his voice to other popular characters in video games such as Mortal Kombat X and Final Fantasy XIII

  2. Deedee Magno Hall the voice of Pearl

If you’re a fan of Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe, then, Deedee Magno Hall’s amazing voice acting skills as Pearl might’ve made you enjoy the series even more, but did you know she’s not only a talented voice actress but even made a name for herself on stage?

Both of her parents hailed from the Philippines, her father came from Baguio, while her mother is from Metro Manila before they migrated to the United States, where Deedee grew up and started her career as a voice actress and later as a Broadway actress for major roles in Ms. Saigon, Wicked, and many more.

  3. Vanille Velasquez the voice from LoL to Valorant

Third on this list is not just a double but triple feature, whether you are a casual or competitive player or love to watch the official e-sport matches of League of Legends and Valorant, fans of either game might be familiar with these two characters.

Since her character release in 2022, Agent Neon from Valorant has hit the major news in the Philippines as the first Filipino agent in the game. Over on League of Legends, we also have an electrifying champion, Zeri. Aside from their almost similar traits and powers, these two characters also share the same voice actress, Vanille Velasquez.

  4. Isabella Rosario Dulnuan Reyes from Call of Duty

While we are on the topic of video games, another wildly played video game in the Philippines for years, is Call of Duty, and even this famous video game has a touch of our Filipino representation as one of its playable characters. Isabella Rosario Dulnuan is one of the operator players in Call of Duty: Vanguard and Call of Duty: Warzone.

Her character story background even matches with real-life events that occur in history during World War II.

  5. The Filipino voices of Genshin Impact

As one of the most popular video games in the Philippines, and around the world, Genshin Impact is a video game that’s notable in pop culture. Did you know, however, that this particular video game includes not one, but three Filipino voice actors and actresses, and that one of them is even considered a god in one of the regions in the game?

Anne Yatco, the voice of Raiden Shogun is the woman behind the cold and powerful ruler of Inazuma in Genshin Impact. Her incredible voice-acting skills made her memorable to even the Filipino fans that got to meet her, and her co-voice actors and actresses during ConQuest 2022.

Fellow Genshin Impact voice actors like Christian Banas and Ratana Therakulsathit also visited the Philippines at the event and interacted with many Filipinos. Even known for their sincerity of being known as the “Kuya” and “Inazuma Titas of Manila” during their stay.

These are even just to name a few of the many other industries that our countrymen had left a mark on and show their talents on the international scene. Truly, opportunities and achievements are up for grabs as long as you are proud of your word and passionate to pursue them.
